We spoke to Gregory and Mary McGrory, directors of Donegal family run business GMG Mechanical Services to discuss sustainable renewable energy solutions, ways to reduce your energy consumption and services the Donegal business provide to make your home and business more energy efficient. 

Tell me a little bit about your business Gregory?

GMG Mechanical is in its 28th year of business. We have previously focused primarily on industrial work but we are now transitioning our focus into the domestic division. With many Irish homes energy bills doubling in the last 12 months, we want to offer practical solutions to reduce costs for many homes and business’s. We have positioned ourselves as leaders in the commercial market for renewable solutions. This has afforded us the experience and knowledge of what the most efficient renewable energy solutions are and what would be suitable in new builds or existing homes that require retro fits.

Tell us about some of the services you offer?

GMG can provide the complete solution for your new heating system and upgrade needs. Working closely with the leading manufacturers, providing best in quality products and services, we can offer peace of mind to our customers that the solution provided works for them. You talked a little about your insulation services, can you give us some more details about this as home insulation appears to be a hot topic in the media at the moment?

There are many different insulation services we offer, and they can vary from property to property, I’ve listed below everything we can offer our customers. 

• Spray foam and vent card, breathable attic insulation
• Bonded bead, cavity wall insulation
• Slow pour foam cavity insulation
• Floor insulation foam
• External wall insulation including passive sills & rendering 
• Cavity wall insulation extraction (all types; fibre, wool etc)
• Close cell spray insulation to prevent condensation.
• Standard insulation attic rolls 
• Attic walkways, Retractable attic access ladders, wall vents 
• Lagging jacket for your hot water cylinder & cold-water storage tank 

What are you seeing and hearing from your customers at the moment?

I suppose the headlines from customers now are energy costs and their bills becoming astronomical. Often queries we receive are homeowners asking for pricing to retrofit properties and install new heating systems. We are getting a lot of feedback from our insulation customers telling us they are saving up to 50% on their heating bills, which they are extremely happy with. There is a high number of customers that aren’t aware of the large number of SEAI grants available to them. GMG and Bio Insulate are registered with SEAI so we can assist in providing services that the homeowners will receive a grant for.  A huge number of our Insulation works are covered by a grant of up 80%.

What should a home/business owner focus on if they are interested in increasing their property's energy rating?

The majority of money we waste on heat is lost through different areas in your home. 

• Up to 35% is lost through your external walls
• Up to 40% through your roof
• Up to 10% through your floors

That being said, one of our insulation assessors will survey your property and advise you on the best solution to insulate your home effectively. 

It’s been really interesting finding out more about GMG and Bio Insulate and what your local company can offer. Is there any immediate actions homeowners and businesses can implement to reduce their bills?

Heating accounts for two-thirds of our annual home energy bills so it’s an easy way to reduce costs. Having your heating system flushed and your boiler or heat pump serviced once a year, by one of our RGI/OFTEC/FGas registered engineers, will make sure it runs more efficiently and could save up to 10% on your bills.

Insulation is a key factor and where most of your hard-earned cash is wasted. People are often not aware that there is €700 - €8000 grants available for attic and cavity wall insulation depending on the upgrades selected. GMG can advise on this.
